Al reverso se lee lo siguiente: en el lado izquierdo "23609 AN OLD WELL OF GUADALUPE", al centro lleva el número "42" sellado, en el lado derecho "Lat. 23° N.; Long. 103° W" y abajo, "Here is an old well at Guadalupe with as primitive a pumping apparatus as one could wish to see. The arrangement is so interesting that it is well worth examining closely, for it works on the principle of the cog-wheel which plays such a part in much more complicated and highly organized machinery. In the narrow well, on an axle which reaches across its top at right angle, is a large wheel several feet in diameter and made of timber. Fastening the timers that form the rim of this wheel together, and at the same time holding them several inches apart so as to form a grooved rim in which a rope can be wound, are pieces of wood so placed that on one side of the wheel they extend far enough beyond its edge to form a row of cogs or teeth al around its circumference. The wheel which the little boy is turning revolves on an axle that turns in a plane perpendicular to that of the other wheel, so that its wooden teeth fit into the cogs on the other wheel. As the little boy revolves the horizontal wheel it turns and revolves the other wheel to which is attached the rope of the well bucket. About the only iron in the entire appartus are iron bands on the hubs of the two wheels, and an iron rim on the wheel that furnishes the motive power. Simple, but it works, and to judge by the expression of the little boy in our view, not such a bad piece of machinery after all!
