And in addition to these many claims for distinction, Guadalajara (gwä thä-lä-hä'ra) is second in importance to the national capital, an honor which she has taken from Puebla, who claimed it for many years. Guadalajara was founded in 1531, but up until about twenty years ago it was a sleepy, backward place, miles from a railroad. Those who wanted to go to this city had to travel many miles in a slow uncomfortable stagecoach. Today it is a busy, up-to-date place connected with the national capital by the Mexican Central Railroad, and a manufacturing center. Here can be found one of the finest climates in the world. The average temperature the year round is 70 degrees. In the winter months the air of this city is probably the driest that can be found on the American continent, and many invalids who suffer from throat or lung trouble come here. Jalisco, the state of which Guadalajara is the capital, was settled by Andalusians. Their descendants who live here today have the pleasant manners and light-hearted ways which they brought from Spain. The women here are considered the most beautiful in Mexico. Because of the pleaseant climate there is a good deal of out-of-door life here, and the city dwellers get full benefit of the clear sky, the dazzling stars, and the bright moon with which they are blessed. Our picture shows us the ten spires which rise above the city. If domes are the earmark of Russia, church spires are equally characteristic of Mexico. En la imagen se observa la hermosa ciudad de Guadalajara, fue fundada en 1531, actualmente es una ciudad industrial, quienes quieran conocerla deber recorrer una larga distancia por una carretera un poco incómoda, sin embargo es un lugar que goza de uno de los mejores climas del mundo, ya que la temperatura oscila entre los 32 grados centígrados. En los meses de invierno el viento es probablemente el más seco de todo el continente americano, por esta razón algunas personas sufren de problemas en la garganta y los riñones. Ciudad colonizada por andaluces de quienes aún conservan el trato y maneras españolas, con mujeres consideradas las más bellas de México. Nuestra imagen muestra las diez torres de iglesias que sobresalen, las fábricas funcionan con energía eléctrica, por ello no se observan nubes de humo.
