- The building housing the Museum was the College and Testing Center of the Society of Jesus (also known as the Jesuits), founded in the 16th century and completed in the 18th century. The first monks who came to Tepotzotlán were Franciscan friars, who ceded the town to the Jesuits in 1580. Construction of the college began in 1606 on six hectares of land donated by the indigenous leader Martín Maldonado and paid for with 34,000 pesos in gold bequeathed by Don Pedro Ruiz de Ahumada. The members of the Society of Jesus intended to establish a college for learning indigenous languages such as Náhuatl, Otomí, and Mazahua. From the 17th to the 18th century, the College underwent a series of extensions thanks to donations from several people.
