The Monterrey and Gulf Line goes to Ciudad Victoria (syoo-thäth'vek-to're-ä) and Monterrey, and a branch of the Mexican Central runs from Tampico to San Luis Potosi. This city being connected with the southern seaports of Mexico by water and having these two railroads in addition, much of the commerce of Mexico flows through her channels. The boats bring to Tampico fruit and articles of native manufacture for export, while the railroad bears to her ixtle (iks'tle) fiber, sugar, hides, live cattle, cottonseed cake, silver bullion, deer skins, honey, fustic, sarsaparilla, coffee, rubber, broomroot, copper ores and asphalt, all of which she sends in turn to other cities. Perhaps some of these articles have eventually come to your home. Through her railroads Tampico can also send articles of the manufacture into other parts of Mexico, for the Tampico manufactures ice, makes clothing, and fruit conserves, has a sawmill, an oil refinery and a shipyard for small boats. Perhaps some of the inhabitants of Tampico are glad that it is possible to leave Tampico and easily go to the more healthy climate of Monterrey, the haven of invalids. The death rate of Tampico is very heavy, and the city has also been visited by epidemics of yellow fever. The Mexican Central Railroad branch, which is shown in this picture, was not easy to build. It is put to good use, however, and it has made know to the outside world the town of San Luis Potosi, located at the other terminal. Copyright by The Keystone View Company".
